# The Future of Agentic Economies

AI Agents, Blockchain Infrastructure and Digital Sovereignty

By [Marc Taverner](https://marctaverner.com/) 2025

**Archive.** This is the 2025 thinking, kept on the record as it was published. It is not current positioning.

The conviction behind it still stands: people and companies should keep control of what they know and what they create as AI does more of the work. Some of the mechanisms have not held up. Paying individuals for ordinary personal data through tokenised data vaults has not produced meaningful, recurring income, and zero knowledge proofs do not let a model compute on data it cannot see. Where I now put money is set out in[Investing in the Harness](/theses/investing-in-the-harness/), and the wider argument in[Agents of Sovereignty](/theses/agents-of-sovereignty/) (October 2026).

## Introduction

Artificial intelligence is moving beyond automation. It is becoming economically autonomous.

As AI agents begin to transact within digital markets, blockchain networks, decentralized finance (DeFi) systems, and tokenized asset ecosystems, the structure of economic participation is shifting.

The transition is not merely technological. It is architectural.

## The shift from labor to agency

Traditional economic systems are built around wage-based labor. AI introduces a structural discontinuity. Autonomous agents can now execute smart contracts, manage digital asset portfolios, negotiate marketplace transactions, optimize decentralized infrastructure and operate continuously across blockchain networks.

This redefines the boundary between human participation and machine execution.

## Blockchain as settlement infrastructure

Agentic systems require trustless execution environments. Blockchain Layer-1 networks provide security and immutability. Layer-2 networks enable scalability and micro-transactions. Smart contracts automate execution logic.

Without decentralized settlement layers, AI agents remain platform-dependent.

## Self-sovereign identity as economic anchor

Digital sovereignty is inseparable from identity control. Self-Sovereign Identity frameworks ensure that AI agents operate under delegated authority rather than centralized platform ownership. In this architecture, identity becomes programmable, consent becomes auditable and data becomes licensable.

SSI prevents agentic economies from collapsing into centralized extraction models.

## Regulatory and governance implications

AI governance, cryptocurrency regulation, and digital asset policy frameworks are rapidly evolving. Questions emerging for policymakers include: should AI agents have legal standing? How should decentralized identity be regulated? What compliance structures apply to Layer-2 ecosystems? How should tokenized data markets be supervised?

Agentic systems intersect directly with MiCA, DORA, digital sovereignty law, and AI governance frameworks globally.

## Institutional strategy in the agentic era

Boards and regulators must evaluate infrastructure resilience, cryptographic security, post-quantum readiness, identity delegation frameworks and decentralized governance structures.

Strategic positioning now requires literacy across AI systems, Web3 identity, and blockchain infrastructure.

## Conclusion

The agentic economy is not a speculative concept. It is an infrastructural evolution.

AI agents, self-sovereign identity, blockchain Layer-1 and Layer-2 networks, and privacy-preserving cryptography are converging into a new economic architecture.

Institutions that understand this transition early will shape the regulatory, technological, and governance frameworks of the next decade.
