# Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) and AI Agents

Identity control as the anchor for agent delegation in the agentic economy

By [Marc Taverner](https://marctaverner.com/) 2025

**Archive.** This is the 2025 thinking, kept on the record as it was published. It is not current positioning.

The conviction behind it still stands: people and companies should keep control of what they know and what they create as AI does more of the work. Some of the mechanisms have not held up. Paying individuals for ordinary personal data through tokenised data vaults has not produced meaningful, recurring income, and zero knowledge proofs do not let a model compute on data it cannot see. Where I now put money is set out in[Investing in the Harness](/theses/investing-in-the-harness/), and the wider argument in[Agents of Sovereignty](/theses/agents-of-sovereignty/) (October 2026).

## What is self-sovereign identity?

Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) is a decentralized identity model that enables individuals to control their digital credentials without reliance on centralized platforms.

Unlike traditional identity systems, which depend on corporate or state-issued verification layers, SSI uses decentralized identifiers (DIDs), verifiable credentials (VCs), cryptographic signatures and blockchain-based trust registries.

SSI allows identity to become portable, programmable, and privacy-preserving.

## Why SSI is foundational to AI agent systems

AI agents increasingly act on behalf of individuals within digital markets. For these agents to transact securely, they require delegated authority, verifiable identity credentials, permissioned access frameworks and compliance-aware trust systems.

Self-Sovereign Identity provides the authentication and delegation layer required for AI agents to operate autonomously in Web3 and blockchain ecosystems. Without SSI, agent-mediated economic participation remains centralized and vulnerable.

## How AI agents use SSI in blockchain environments

AI agents operating within blockchain Layer-1 and Layer-2 networks require cryptographically verifiable identity signals. In a decentralized architecture, an individual controls identity credentials, delegation rights are granted to an AI agent, the agent transacts within smart contract environments, and zero-knowledge proofs validate identity without exposing personal data.

This enables privacy-preserving digital commerce, secure DeFi participation, tokenized asset management and compliance-compatible automation.

## SSI, zero-knowledge proofs and post-quantum security

Modern digital sovereignty requires advanced cryptographic systems. Self-Sovereign Identity frameworks increasingly integrate zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), post-quantum cryptography (PQC), secure multi-party computation and encrypted data vault architecture.

These systems protect against centralized data extraction, identity theft, and future quantum-era vulnerabilities. This cryptographic resilience is foundational to long-term digital asset infrastructure.

## SSI in Web3, digital assets and DeFi

Self-Sovereign Identity plays a critical role in cryptocurrency exchanges and custody platforms, decentralized finance (DeFi) participation, DAO governance structures, tokenized asset issuance and cross-border digital identity compliance.

SSI allows institutions and individuals to balance regulatory requirements with privacy-preserving blockchain participation.

## Strategic implications for boards and regulators

For boards, regulators, and institutional investors, SSI raises critical governance questions. How should identity delegation to AI agents be structured? What compliance mechanisms are required in decentralized systems? How do Layer-1 and Layer-2 networks integrate identity frameworks? How should digital sovereignty policies evolve?

These issues intersect directly with AI governance, crypto regulation, and digital asset oversight.

## SSI as infrastructure for Agentic Universal Basic Income

Self-Sovereign Identity is a core building block of the Agentic Universal Basic Income (AUBI) thesis. Without identity control, individuals cannot securely delegate economic agency to AI agents. SSI enables consent-driven data monetization, autonomous micro-income generation and privacy-preserving smart contract execution.

It forms the identity backbone of the agentic economy.
