**Archive.** This is the 2025 thinking, kept on the record as it was published. It is not current positioning.

The conviction behind it still stands: people and companies should keep control of what they know and what they create as AI does more of the work. Some of the mechanisms have not held up. Paying individuals for ordinary personal data through tokenised data vaults has not produced meaningful, recurring income, and zero knowledge proofs do not let a model compute on data it cannot see. Where I now put money is set out in[Investing in the Harness](/theses/investing-in-the-harness/), and the wider argument in[Agents of Sovereignty](/theses/agents-of-sovereignty/) (October 2026).

## Thesis statement

In a post-quantum world characterized by AI agents autonomously executing decisions on behalf of individuals, the agentic economy will rely on decentralized, privacy-preserving infrastructures where individuals maintain sovereignty over their identity and data. This thesis argues that integrating self-sovereign identity (SSI), zero-knowledge cryptography, tokenized data vaults, and verifiable agent credentials will be essential to ensure personal data monetization, privacy, and trust at scale.

## Core arguments

### 1\. Agentic economy equals AI first infrastructure

* AI agents will represent humans and organizations autonomously in marketplaces, communications, and services.
* These agents must be identifiable, verifiable, and bound to human owners via SSI-based credential systems.

_Implication:_ A robust, decentralized identity framework for both humans and AI agents is critical to secure transactions and trust.

### 2\. Privacy by design through SSI and ZKPs

* Quantum-era threats require post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) to ensure privacy resilience.
* Users must retain control over which attributes they disclose via selective disclosure and privacy-preserving credential proofs.

_Implication:_ ZKPs and PQC-enabled wallets will be core enablers of a privacy-first identity infrastructure.

### 3\. Personal data monetization via agent delegation

* Tokenized personal data vaults will allow individuals to selectively license access to their data.
* Personal AI agents can act on behalf of users in data marketplaces, negotiating terms, enforcing consent via smart contracts, and earning rewards.

_Implication:_ Individuals can derive recurring micro-income streams while maintaining data sovereignty.

### 4\. Decentralized credential economies

* Credential issuers (governments, universities, enterprises) and verifiers (employers, platforms) will participate in decentralized marketplaces where credentials are monetized.
* Tokenized payment and reputation systems will underpin this infrastructure.

_Implication:_ The value of verified information will be reflected in market mechanisms governed by token-based micro-transactions.

### 5\. Quantum resistant identity ecosystems

* Quantum computing threatens classical cryptographic systems underpinning identity and data infrastructures.
* Identity providers must transition to PQC (e.g., NIST-approved lattice cryptography) to maintain future-proof security.

_Implication:_ Providers offering quantum-safe upgrades and AI-ready credentialing services will gain early-mover advantage.

## Strategic opportunities for innovation

* **Agent identity infrastructure.** A SaaS or open-source platform that issues and manages verifiable credentials for AI agents (chatbots, drones, bots).
* **Post-quantum SSI wallet.** A cross-platform wallet with integrated PQC, biometric backup, and agent delegation capabilities.
* **Data monetization co-ops.** DAO-governed platforms that aggregate user data and sell anonymized insights with cryptographic guarantees.
* **Privacy ad AI marketplaces.** Agent-mediated, zero-knowledge ad networks where users get paid to opt in to personalized advertising.
* **Compliance middleware.** Tooling that enables legacy enterprises to plug into decentralized identity systems without overhauling their stack.

## Research contributions

* Bridging AI, blockchain, and quantum-resilient infrastructure to empower individual data agency.
* Proposing interoperable trust models and marketplaces where agents act on human-aligned incentives.
* Framing data as labor and identity as a programmable, monetizable asset.
