Abstract
As general AI agents displace large segments of human labor, traditional income-generation models will erode. This thesis proposes a new paradigm where personal AI agents autonomously transact and monetize an individual's self-sovereign data in micro-payment marketplaces, generating a form of Universal Basic Income (UBI) without government redistribution. We call this Agentic Universal Basic Income (AUBI).
Displacement of human labor by the agentic economy
- Widespread automation. General-purpose AI agents will perform not only physical tasks but also cognitive, creative, and service work, reducing demand for human labor across white collar and blue collar jobs.
- Shrinking wage economy. As automation lowers marginal costs, corporations will optimize for efficiency, not employment, leading to structural unemployment.
- Rise of digital rentierism. Those who control scarce digital assets (IP, data, compute, algorithms) will accumulate wealth, while laborers are increasingly excluded from income flows.
From tax redistribution to agentic value creation
Traditional UBI: funded by state redistribution (e.g., carbon tax, robot tax, wealth tax); politically difficult to scale or sustain; treats individuals as passive recipients.
Agentic UBI (AUBI): generated by individual-owned AI agents negotiating data transactions in real time; built on self-sovereign data, zero-knowledge proof sharing, and programmable consent; powered by decentralized micro-payment protocols and tokenized marketplaces; reduces dependence on state transfers.
Agentic Universal Basic Income infrastructure
- SSI wallet. Stores identity credentials and permissions for data sharing.
- Personal AI agent. Negotiates on behalf of the user to monetize data, attention, and tasks.
- Data vault. Secure store for structured personal data (health, browsing, IoT, etc.).
- ZKP layer. Ensures data verification without exposure.
- Tokenized payments. Executes micro-payments in crypto or fiat for data usage or insights.
- Consent engine. Lets users define policies (e.g., sell anonymized fitness data only).
- Agent reputation layer. Builds trust between autonomous agents across networks.
Monetizable data streams
- Health and fitness metrics. Personal health data from wearables and medical records that can be anonymized and monetized for research and development.
- Browsing behavior. Online activity patterns that provide valuable insights for marketers and product developers.
- Mobility patterns. Smart car telemetry and location data that can inform urban planning and transportation services.
- Purchase and attention data. Consumer preferences and engagement metrics valuable to retailers and advertisers.
- Professional credentials. Verified skills and qualifications that can be shared with potential employers or service platforms.
Economic and policy implications
- From welfare state to self-monetizing citizen. AUBI shifts economic agency back to the individual, allowing citizens to generate income from previously unmonetized digital behavior. Eliminates reliance on the welfare bureaucracy or taxation for income redistribution.
- A new tax base: autonomous agent markets. Governments could tax the marketplaces (not individuals), ensuring economic activity remains trackable and ethical while preserving privacy.
- Incentivizing open data ecosystems. Data cooperatives and DAOs can aggregate user data and negotiate better returns for contributors, creating a fairer alternative to Big Tech platforms.
- Post-labor legitimacy of the state. States could transition from employment-based legitimacy to infrastructure-providing legitimacy (e.g., secure identity, agent licensing, auditability).
Thesis contribution
This model positions human data as the "new labor," and personal AI agents as its "workers".
- A sustainable, privacy-respecting income layer. Creating economic value while maintaining individual control over personal data through consent mechanisms and zero-knowledge proofs.
- A mechanism for inclusion in an AI-driven economy. Ensuring all individuals can participate in and benefit from automation and AI advancement, regardless of traditional employment status.
- A decentralized alternative to tax-funded UBI models. Reducing dependence on centralized government redistribution by enabling direct value capture from personal data assets.
Summary
In a world where AI displaces human labor, self-sovereign data plus agentic automation offers a powerful replacement for traditional income: Agentic Universal Basic Income (AUBI). Unlike welfare-based UBI, AUBI is funded by the digital productivity of a person's AI agents negotiating on their behalf.
This framework transforms identity, behavior, and consent into programmable capital, ushering in a decentralized and user-controlled economic future.
